Please consult your tax, legal, or financial advisors concerning the specific details and consequences of making a Legacy Gift to The Cannabis Foundation and to help you determine which approach is best for you.
Estate Giving
You can turn your property's value into community good by making a gift of real estate to The Cannabis Foundation. You can continue to live in and fully enjoy your home (or vacation property) as long as you like while giving the future ownership of it to The Foundation. The gift of the "remainder interest" is a charitable contribution in the year the gift arrangement is made, which may result in a substantial income tax charitable deduction. When the life tenancy terminates, The Foundation becomes the owner of the property and the proceeds of the property's sale may be used to establish a fund at the Foundation.
Life Insurance
Making The Cannabis Foundation the beneficiary of a life insurance policy is one of the simplest ways to support its cause. When you name The Cannabis Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy, you receive an immediate tax deduction that approximates the cash surrender value of the policy. All premium payments made thereafter are deductible as a charitable contribution.
IRA
The IRA charitable rollover provision permits individuals age 70 and older to make charitable donations of up to $100,000 from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Roth IRAs without having to count the distributions as taxable income. The IRA Charitable Rollover is intended to benefit donors of all income levels. You should consult with your tax or legal counsel to make sure that you meet all the criteria and that your intended gift will qualify under this provision.
There are two types of workplace giving models that can enable you to contribute if you stay behind what The Cannabis Foundation is trying achieve and want to make a difference.
Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving is a form or workplace giving that is easy for employers to set-up and is low on costs and administration resources. Donations are automatically deducted from your pay pre-tax, so your taxable income is reduced and you pay tax on this lower amount. This means you will receive the tax benefit every month, without the need for receipts or waiting until the end of the financial year to claim.
Corporate Matching
Hundreds of companies have donation programs through which they will "match" the charitable contributions made by their employees. Through corporate gift matching, you can multiply your donation to The Cannabis Foundation, making it go further. Please contact your Human Resources department to determine if your employer offers an employee matching gift program and if DHF meets the criteria. Find the correct paperwork or the URL to submit a matching gift from the company and submit any necessary forms.
You can put your unused miles to work for The Cannabis Foundation through several major airlines like American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue. DHF will use the donated frequent flyer miles to fly patients or doctors from different parts of the country who need clinical trials. If you would like to donate your frequent flyer miles to DHF, please contact your airline. The IRS recognizes the donation of airline miles or points as a gift from the airline to the charitable organization. Therefore, miles donated are not considered tax-deductible by the individual donor.
Make a bigger impact by donating long-term appreciated securities, including stock, bonds, and mutual funds, directly to The Cannabis Foundation. You can deduct the current market value of the gift for income tax purposes (just like cash) and avoid any capital gains taxes you would have owed if you had sold the assets instead. So by donating stocks, you may be able to automatically increase your gift and your tax deduction. Tax deduction limit for giving stock donation to a public charity is 30% of the gross adjusted income. Contact your brokerage firm to find out what steps you need to take. Usually, you'll need to fill out a transfer form. Please be sure to notify us that the money is on its way.
Independent fundraisers are a core part of what we do. We couldn't support our mission funding clinical trials without your help. You can create your own events and support our cause. There are countless ways to raise money for cannabis based research. You can plan from organizing marathon events to climb, bike, or hike, theme parties or ask your friends and family to donate for your birthday. You can google “Creative Fundraising ideas A to Z” and get hundreds of fun ideas on fundraising. No matter what you choose, your passion will enable us to raise money that will go towards funding bold new ideas to fight debilitating diseases.
